FULL MOON IN SAGITTARIUS – It’s time for a reality check but positive support is provided for doing this (June 9, 2017)

Astrology-New-Moon-Full-MoonIn the Pacific Time Zone, the Moon will be full at 6:09 a.m. on Friday, June 9.  With this Full Moon, the Sun in Gemini will be in opposition (180°) to the Moon in Sagittarius.  To further clarify how this Full Moon will impact you on a personal level, locate 19° of Gemini and 19° of Sagittarius in your birth/natal chart.  The issues associated with those two houses are going to be most impacted by this Full Moon’s presence.

All Full Moons challenge us to find a balance between the qualities of the two signs involved, which in this case are Gemini and Sagittarius.  Gemini is an air sign that focuses on communication, mental stimulation, and being flexible.  Sag is a fire sign that is interested in being straightforward, ethical, and adventurous.  Both signs love learning, but Gemini wants to gather information, whereas Sagittarius wants to use wisdom to discern which pieces of information are important (and which aren’t).

At the time of the Full Moon, Saturn is conjunct (0°) the Moon in Sagittarius, which means Saturn is also in opposition (180°) to the Sun in Gemini.  Saturn always brings a “reality check.”  By being involved in this Sagittarius Full Moon, it is asking us to look at where we are no longer aligned with our definition of integrity, truth, and spiritual beliefs, all of which are needed in order to form a solid foundation upon which to build and run our lives.  Now would be a good time to check to see if we have unintentionally turned off our intuitive wisdom or inadvertently abandoned our inner truth.

Additionally, the Moon/Saturn and Sun are squaring (90°) Neptune, which forms a t-square (right triangle) in the sky above us.  Being the “focal planet” of the t-square makes Neptune an important player in this Full Moon.  Neptune is in Pisces, its home sign, which intensifies its power.  Full Moons can bring out the shadow side of the signs and planets involved, so we might feel pulled to escape reality through denial, deception, addiction, illusion, or dependence (all are lower expressions of Neptune & Pisces).  Escaping may feel good in the short run, but it is only a temporary fix.  We need to consciously use the higher expression of Neptune & Pisces, including compassion, intuition, and spirituality.  When integrated with this New Moon, Neptune is reminding us that we are all One, and it would be beneficial for us to look at where our family, community, or society is out of alignment with integrity or isn’t working to serve the highest good of all involved.

Luckily, falling into the lower expression of Neptune and Pisces is less due to the presence of Saturn, which has a way of stripping away any defense mechanisms.  Again, Saturn is all about “reality.”  And at the time of the Full Moon, Saturn continues to square (90°) Chiron. Consequently, our greatest lessons come from seeing our wounds with compassion.  In order to heal, we may need to face some intense emotional issues.  It also indicated that activities such as prayer, meditation, or any of the creative arts may help in our healing process.

Adding support for healing comes in the form of a wonderful grand trine configuration (i.e., an equilateral triangle) in fire signs.  The Moon/Saturn in Sagittarius are trining (120°) Uranus in Aries, which is trining (120°) and the North Node in Leo.  This same configuration involving Saturn, Uranus, and the North Node was present in the last Moon Update, but this time the Moon joins them, which adds an emotional element to the fiery energy.  Trines provide a very supportive, free-flowing energy, so emotional breakthroughs and realizations are possible.  And the involvement of Saturn means we’ll be able to figure out how to apply these insights in very practical ways.  Given the North Node in Leo is part of this configuration means it is likely we need to face any insecurities or self-doubts so we can use our unique gifts in some important way on a larger stage.

Also mentioned in the last Moon Update was an inconjunct (150°) between the Sun and Pluto, which is still in effect during this Sagittarius Full Moon.  Inconjuncts require adjustments, and this one is no exception.  Pluto is about deep healing and how we use power.  The Sun is shedding light on where we may need to make adjustments in these areas so we can effectively move forward in our lives and further our psychological development.

It is important to note that right before the Full Moon on Tuesday, June 6, both Mercury and Venus enter their ruling signs, which means they are super charged with energy.  And two days earlier on Sunday, June 4, Mars moved into Cancer (see last Moon Update).  Therefore, all three of the “inner” or “personal” planets changed signs right before the Full Moon, which provides us with a lot of new and easily accessible energy:

  • For Mercury, this is a movement into Gemini, where it will remain until June 22. After the slower-paced mental energy of Mercury in Taurus, having Mercury in Gemini often feels like our minds are suddenly on hyperdrive and we will have a harder than usual time slowing down our thoughts (and even our mouths).  But the good news is that our thinking will likely become clearer and more objective.  Although we can be more easily distracted than usual with Mercury in Gemini, it’s because we become very curious about everything and want increased mental stimulation.  We also seek out opportunities to share what we are learning with others.
  • The same day, Venus enters Taurus for a month-long stay. One of the biggest key words for this placement is sensuality!  We want to experience and enjoy the world with our five senses, so it’s a good time to do anything enjoyable that engages the body.  Expressions of love should be very tangible, such as hugs, sensual touch, or even gifts.  The shadow side of this placement is possessiveness.  We want security, and we need to be careful not to hold someone (or something) too tight for fear of losing them.  With regard to our finances, we feel drawn to pursuits and investments that are long-lasting, practical, and solid.  Speculation is less appealing now, both in our relationships and financial world.  We are willing to invest in something that may take time to build but will provide concrete results.

On the day of the Full Moon (Friday, June 9), Jupiter stops its retrograde phase and begins moving direct again.  It began moving retrograde back on February 5.  Given this is happening on the day of the Full Moon, it means that Jupiter is extra powerful.  If we have done the work of the retrograde phase, we are ready to grow and expand in some new direction.  Given Jupiter is in Libra, whatever change(s) we decide to make will need to include values such as equality, balance, justice, peace, and beauty.  Libra’s involvement also means that those changes will likely involve relationships of some kind.  While in retrograde, we may have been exploring whether we have an equal give-and-take in our partnerships, and as Jupiter picks up speed over the next few weeks, we become ready to make necessary adjustments so everyone receives their fair share.

On Friday, June 16, Neptune begins its annual retrograde phase.  Neptune is slow moving, so its backward motion will last all the way through November 21.  As with all retrograde periods, this one will draw us inward, and with Neptune, this means reviewing and possibly revamping some part of our spiritual life.  However, unlike other planets that go into retrograde, Neptune’s backward motion is often a positive experience.  While direct, Neptune can be like the fog that rolls in and we have to work hard to keep our vision clear.  While in retrograde, the fog often lifts and we can clearly see how we haven’t been perceiving things as they are.  Any fantasies, idealism, or illusions drop away, and anything that isn’t aligned with our spiritual nature comes into clear focus.  Often this is a time when we become aware that we’ve been looking to the outside world to feed our souls, and we now see that this must be “an inside job.”  The next five months are a particularly good time of year to engage in meditation, mindfulness, and seek outside support for inner work through counseling or coaching.

Then on Sunday, June 18, the Sun forms a sweet sextile (60°) to Uranus.  Sextiles are subtle, so we can miss them if we don’t consciously choose to use their supportive energy.  This sextile is urging us to find ways to achieve more freedom and independence in our lives.  However, the influence of Uranus is always unpredictable.  For some, we may feel a need to withdraw for a few days and gain some emotional distance from recent problems.  For others, we may feel ready to join groups or attend social events.  It’s important to remain flexible, be adaptable, and “go with the flow” in order to achieve the greatest use of this supportive aspect.

Overall, Sagittarius Full Moons are known for helping us sort through all the facts and the details in order to determine what is aligned with and supportive of our essential truths.  This Full Moon continues the trend from the previous New Moon’s focus on our belief systems and clearing out any negative thought patterns, and it also provides support for integrating and deeply engraining any new thought systems, habits, and positive mindsets.  With the influence of Saturn, we can cut through any Neptunian illusions or defense mechanisms, and having Mercury and Venus move into their own signs at the time of the Full Moon adds powerful clarity and support.  Additionally, having Jupiter moving direct on the day of the Full Moon adds positive, optimistic energy.  Therefore, keep weeding out any negativity because it really is true that, “Positive thinking evokes more energy, more initiative, more happiness” (Unknown).
