In the Pacific Time Zone, the New Moon will occur at 6:38 a.m. on Monday, February 8. This New Moon finds the Moon and Sun in conjunction (0°) at 20° of Aquarius. To further clarify how this New Moon will impact you on a personal level, locate 20° of Aquarius in your birth/natal chart. The issues associated with that house are going to be most influenced by this New Moon’s presence.
New Moons always provide us with new energy and new opportunities to create within the areas of life associated with the sign involved. This time, the New Moon is in Aquarius. Keywords for Aquarius include independence, inventiveness, humanitarianism, intuition, eccentric, and a heightened sense of responsible for everything and everyone. With an Aquarius New Moon, we will likely find ourselves focusing on how we can best utilize the power of group collaboration to reach mutually agreed to goals. This can help us see that a group can usually achieve something far greater than an individual working by him or herself. It says, “Let’s change the world” and reminds us that we are not alone on this third rock from the Sun.
It’s important to note that Mars forms a very close square (90°) to this New Moon. Mars brings an impulsive, impatient energy to the table, and our actions may not be well-thought out. It can also elicit our competitive or pushy side, which can evoke conflict with others or can just cause a lot of internal frustration. So although we may have lots of ideas right now (i.e., Aquarius is an air sign which means increased mental energy), it may be best to take it slow regarding implementing changes.
However, a nice sextile (60°) between Mars and Venus may help soften the square between Mars and the New Moon. A willingness to compromise and take a problem-solving approach to any group activities may be easier to access right now. It’s important for all of us to take responsibility for and own our own psychological “stuff,” because this will lead to greater mutual appreciation. This aspect could also help our financial or artistic pursuits flow smoothly.
Additionally, another sextile (60°) between the New Moon and Uranus reminds us that keeping an open mind and being willing to adapt to new circumstances or ideas can also help cool the impulsive energy of Mars, which wants to charge ahead regardless of the consequences. Flexibility is the key to success right now, as is being emotionally willing to adjust our expectations. Group activities are supported; so it may be a good time to bring people together for a brain-storming session. However, it’s probably best to have the clear directive that all ideas will be considered but nothing will be decided until a later date.
But even with these sextiles that hopefully will “soften” the energy, the square between this New Moon and Mars could signal a turning point in our aspirations. With Aquarius involved, it’s especially important that we make sure that our desires are coming from a place of altruism and not a place of ego. The influence of Mars also means that we will need to face our fears in order to move forward toward our goals. Luckily, Mars will provide us with the courage and the energy to move through these fears. And it is likely we will discover that the imagined monster wasn’t that frightening after all because Mars is also in a close trine (120°) to Chiron. This very supportive aspect makes it easier for us to be spiritual warriors as we move toward our own healing. We may feel ready to start taking care of our physical bodies, such as beginning or resuming an exercise regime or even setting overdue medical appointments. Given Chiron is in Pisces, any actions that we take may involve trusting our intuition and internal hunches.
Throughout this New Moon in Aquarius, our feelings may be a bit “all over the place.” Again, Mars is very involved in this New Moon, and it’s located in Scorpio right now, which can bring up passionate feelings. Keep in mind that any strong emotions that surface now are meant to help us face issues that we may have been avoiding and to have the courage to take new and different actions.
Another supportive aspect that is occurring during this New Moon is a trine (120°) between Venus and Jupiter. Even with all this powerful Mars energy, this trine could result in an underlying feeling of cheerfulness and optimism that helps support us in making important decisions. It may also incline many of us to do something enjoyable. And given that both planets are located in earth signs (Virgo & Capricorn, respectively), this may involve very “down-to-earth” things, like getting a message, taking a nap, having a quiet meal with friends, reading a good book, or watching a nice movie.
I think it’s also important to note that Mercury is now moving direct again. While in retrograde during January, many of us were thinking deeply about a lot of issues. And now, we may be gaining the clarity we need to make important decisions in our life. This new forward motion gives us new energy that may support us in dealing with some of those “stuck” areas.
In sum, the first week of February could feel a bit a like a pressure cooker. Several aspects are pushing many of us to take a long look at what we need to let go of that no longer serves us and really face our fears. Luckily by mid-February, when the Sun, Mercury, and Venus are all located in Aquarius (see below), we will all likely feel a major shift that supports us in being more objective and less emotionally reactive.
On Saturday, February 13, Mercury leaves the heavier, more serious energy of Capricorn and moves into the lighter, more light-hearted energy of Aquarius, where it will remain until March 6. While Mercury is in Aquarius, we may make spontaneous mental connections that provide new solutions to long-standing problems. And the same day, Mars forms a sweet sextile (60°) with Jupiter, which may give us increased courage and optimism that supports new growth. It also can provide a belief in ourselves that will help us move forward where we have feared to tread before.
Venus follows Mercury into Aquarius on Tuesday, February 16, and it will stay in that sign until March 13. Venus isn’t exactly comfortable in Aquarius. Venus wants to express love, and Aquarius wants to love everyone but in an objective way. However, this detachment isn’t “bad,” because it does allow us to see things more objectively and appreciate alternative perspectives. We also may find ourselves drawn to unconventional pursuits or unusual people. We may not be feeling as “lovey-dovey” with our significant other while Venus is in Aquarius, but group activities are definitely favored, especially if the group shares a common humanitarian goal.
Overall, this New Moon in Aquarius is asking us to look for where we can find strength through like-minded others, friends, and group associations. As we discussed in the last Moon Update, we each have gifts that we were destined to share with the world. With this New Moon, it’s time to bring those gifts to our community so we can achieve our goals . . . together. The transition of both Mercury and Venus into Aquarius mid-month will feel, for some, like a breath of fresh (objective) air. And the upcoming Full Moon in Virgo on February 22 will bring some wonderful energy into our lives. However, keep in mind that everything happening in February is setting us up for the changes that are coming in March due to the eclipses that will be occurring during that time. So do the work now to make the changes needed in order to be ready for those upcoming changes. And remember, “Man cannot discover new oceans unless he has the courage to lose sight of the shore” (Andre Gide).
NOTE: This New Moon in Aquarius is also the beginning of the Chinese New Year. This is the year of the Monkey, which is often a time of intelligence and creativity, but also impulsiveness or opportunism. But this is also the year of the Fire Monkey. When the element of Fire is added, this means it could also be a dynamic year when we are courageous, assertive, and feeling our personal strength. Fire Monkey years are excellent times to explore learning, innovation, and following one’s dream.
