In the Pacific Time Zone, the New Moon will occur at 2:29 a.m. on Friday, December 11. This New Moon finds the Moon and Sun in conjunction (0°) at exactly 20° of Sagittarius. To further clarify how this New Moon will impact you on a personal level, locate 20° of Sagittarius in your birth/natal chart. The issues associated with that house are going to be most influenced by this New Moon’s presence.
All New Moons provide us with the opportunity to begin anew within the sign in which they occur. New Moon in Sagittarius usually usher in light-hearted energy that is fun, uplifting, and easy going. The symbol associated with the sign of Sagittarius is the centaur pointing his arrow to the sky, which represents the inseparable dimensions of human, animal, and spirit. However, Saturn is also in Sagittarius right now, which may bring out the more serious side of Sag. For example, we may feel compelled to seek out truth, meaning, and purpose in our lives. Saturn’s seriousness may also mean that we find ourselves interested in exploring our spiritual path and life purpose.
Jupiter, which is the ruler of Sagittarius, squares (90°) this New Moon. Squares always represent turning points. With this one, we may discover that we have been operating based on some inaccurate information or false beliefs. It is helpful now to avoid being critical or judgmental. Instead, it is most helpful to focus on working toward solutions that are based on facts and not overblown ideas of what “could be.” Jupiter will help us put recent events in proper perspective and provide optimism to support venturing out into the world again. We do need to be a little careful, though, not to talk too much or speak our opinions in a self-righteous or dogmatic way, which can be the tendency with so much Sag energy being activated by expansive Jupiter.
Chiron is also squaring (90°) this New Moon and is in opposition (180°) to Jupiter. This forms a mutable t-square (right triangle) in the sky above us. T-squares are like super-powered squares because they involve two squares and an opposition. With the three end-points of this t-square all in mutable signs, this means we need to be flexible and adaptable because the events and people around us will likely be unpredictable. And with Chiron involved in this powerful New Moon, we are being asked to heal some of our most fundamental beliefs or deepest fears, which often came from our greatest wounding experiences. Given that Chiron is in Pisces, this means that healing often requires that we move beyond the fear of the unknown and focus, instead, on faith and trust.
Luckily, Venus is trine (120°) Neptune at the time of the New Moon, which provides wonderful support for us to open our hearts to new levels of unconditional love for ourselves, others, and humanity. This means a possible deepening in our understanding that we are all one and that the idea of separation is only an illusion. Compassion, harmony, and kindness come easily now, and the best way to harness the energy of this aspect is to be gentle with each other and with ourselves.
All of this is happening during two very powerful astrological events that will be impacting us throughout the month of December and into January:
- Due to Uranus being in retrograde for the past few months, during the months of December and January, Uranus will move to within 2° of a square (90°) with Pluto. This is giving us one final “push” to resolve any issues that weren’t completed during the 2.5 years of Uranus-Pluto squares that we experienced between 2012 and the early part of 2015. That “push” comes in the form of Mars, which is in opposition (180°) to Uranus and is squaring (90°) Pluto. This forms one of those square (i.e., right triangles) mentioned above. As is true with all Uranus aspects, during this 2-month period, it’s a good idea to expect the unexpected and to not resist change when it crosses our path. The good news is that Mars will provide us with the strength, energy, and courage to explore some new ideas and directions. This will be especially strong around December 19-20 when Mercury also gets involved and amps up the energy even higher.
- As we discussed at length in the last Full Moon in Gemini, we are just beginning to feel the impact of a series of three squares (90°) between Saturn and Neptune, which will impact us through much of 2016. This square only happens every 32 years, so it’s a big deal! In sum, we will be asked to (a) look at what foundations are no longer serving our long-term spiritual growth and (b) explore how we can express our spirituality in concrete forms. Read more about this powerful influence in the last Moon Update.
With both of these strong astrological influences, there will be a lot of volatile, potentially aggressive or unpredictable energy swirling around us for about two months. We need to consciously make the choice to not get pulled into the drama of others or of society. There will be ample energy available, and we need to use it to focus on self-improvement, being courageous, and changing our thought patterns. Use the spiritual skills we have developed to remain calm and centered, such as meditating, being around like-minded others, reading spiritual literature, being out in nature, and doing whatever we need in order to comfort and soothe ourselves.
Right before this New Moon, Mercury moves out of Sag and into Capricorn on Wednesday, December 9, where it will remain until January 3. When the planet of communication is in Capricorn, our thoughts and conversations can take on a serious tone. We want all communication to be direct, to-the-point, and practical. We are willing to do our research which means that we often make good decisions. This influence is especially well-timed during the holiday season when many gifts are purchased.
On Thursday, December 17, a sweet sextile (60°) between Venus and Pluto will help bring honesty and depth to our relationships. New levels of intimacy are possible. Whatever we feel drawn to do will be gently imbued with passion. We will likely feel a level of focus and confidence that will help us with our finances or relationships.
The next day (Friday, December 18) sees a square (90°) between the Sun and the North and South Nodes. Remember, squares often represent turning points, and the Sun is now shining its light on issues that involve things like learning to be of service, staying present, and taking concrete steps toward self-improvement. But reaching those goals may involve releasing self-doubt and any desire we have to withdraw from challenging situations. It’s all about moving out of any victim-consciousness and moving toward self-mastery and service.
On Saturday, December 19 and Sunday, December 20, a series of aspects will move relationship issues to the forefront of our lives. We may find ourselves healing some pretty intense wounds, and it will likely involve facing some difficult issues. Conversations could get pretty intense if we aren’t careful due to a conjunction (0°) between Mercury and Pluto. But if we use this energy constructively, we will be able to communicate honestly and get to the heart of the matter. Yes, a square (90°) between Mercury and Uranus means that talking may not feel especially good, but we need to trust that what we learn from these discussions will be very important in determining our future plans. Luckily, a sextile (60°) between Mercury and Chiron on Monday, December 21, will help us all move toward acceptance and forgiveness.
Monday, December 21, is also the solstice, when the Sun moves into Capricorn and the seasons change. It is believed by some astrologers that the chart at the time of the solstice indicates themes that will influence us for the next three months. Without going into details, there are indications that we are not yet done with all the shifts instigated by the Uranus-Pluto squares of 2012-2015. But it is clear that we need to embrace change and transformation. If we are willing to go against conventional wisdom or our usual ways of thinking, we can access a new level of understanding and internal peace that will serve us well during the next part of our spiritual journey.
Overall, we are being asked to prepare carefully for what lies ahead by facing facts, discerning the truth, and clearing out any old beliefs that are hindering our progress. The energy of Sag encourages us to be wise, and the powerful astrological events occurring during December and January make it imperative that we take aligned action. And when volatile energies swirl around us, we need to use our spiritual skills to remain focused, centered, and calm. Detaching with love is key now. So remember, “Peace . . . it does not mean to be in a place where there is no noise, trouble, or hard work. It means to be in the midst of those things and still be calm in your heart.” (Unknown)
