In the Pacific Time Zone, the Moon will be full at 11:37 a.m. on Wednesday, July 13.  With this Full Moon, the Sun in Cancer will be in opposition (180°) to the Moon in Capricorn.  To further clarify how this Full Moon will impact you on a personal level, locate 21°21’ of Cancer and 21°21’ of Capricorn in your birth/natal chart.  The issues associated with those two houses are going to be most impacted by this Full Moon’s presence.

All Full Moons involve finding a better balance between the qualities of the 2 signs involved.  This time, those signs are Cancer and Capricorn:

  • The best qualities of Cancer include being nurturing, emotionally sensitive, sympathetic, family-oriented, and intuitive/psychic. The lower expression can involve being overly moody, dependent, and fearful.
  • The higher expression of Capricorn includes being responsible, practical, disciplined, patient, organized, and a hard worker. The lower expression could mean being critical, overly conventional, materialistic, and focused on status.

In general, Cancer is associated with family and our home, and Capricorn is focused on our contributions to the public world, which for many people is associated with our career.  Our challenge during the Capricorn Full Moon is to evaluate if we are attending to one end of this continuum more than the other.  If so, this is a time to course correct.  It may be that we’ve recently been spending a great deal of time on our external duties and responsibilities, and inadvertently, we may have been neglecting our family or private life.  Or it could be the other way around.  For example, it may become apparent that we have become dependent on another person and need to break free so we can make our unique mark in the world as an individual.  As is true with all Full Moons, we will be happier and healthier if we attend to both areas of our life.  Each one feeds our soul and teaches us lessons, just in different ways.

However, this Capricorn Full Moon is extra powerful:  The Sun is conjunct (0°) communicative Mercury, and the Moon is conjunct (0°) powerhouse Pluto.  This means that the Moon is in an opposition (180°) to Mercury and that the Sun is opposing (180°) Pluto.  That’s a lot of aspects!  Here’s a brief list of some possible expressions:

  • We may feel a need to express our thoughts and feelings, but our emotions may be guiding what we say rather than our logic.
  • We could become aware that better communication skills are needed, especially when talking about sensitive issues.
  • Having Pluto involved means that unconscious material may come to the surface, including secrets being revealed. Or, it could be that we become aware of information within our own psyches.
  • The combination of Pluto, the Moon, and Cancer tells us that we could encounter someone who tries to overpower us. If this happens, then we might feel extra sensitive, vulnerable, and/or defensive.  Keep in mind that we could also be the one who steps into that overpowering position.  Either way, it’s important to remember that truly effective communication requires an equal give-and-take and balance of power.
  • Disagreements or conflict with others is possible, although not inevitable. They are more likely if someone is determined to get others to agree to their point of view.  We need to consciously monitor what we are saying or writing in order to make sure it’s compassionate and respectful.

But both ends of this opposition (180°) between the Sun/Mercury and the Moon/Pluto are squaring (90°) Chiron in Aries.  This is forming one of those infamous t-square configurations (i.e., right triangles) that we often talk about.  This time, Chiron is the “focal planet.”  Squares always indicate that change is needed, and with so many planets squared by Chiron, the possibilities are probably endless regarding how this might be expressed.  In general, this means that we have a good chance of recognizing and healing any vulnerabilities that we are feeling.  However, the healing process may involve digging deep (Pluto) to find what is undermining our self-confidence or feeling a fear of being different (Chiron).  We also need to be aware that the square between Mercury and Chiron could result in words being used to wound others.  Again, this is a reminder that we need to consciously be aware of what we are saying to others, both in written and oral formats.  We also should pay attention to how we are talking to ourselves.  Our inner children are listening!

Luckily, we have a lot of planetary support during this Full Moon.  Uranus is in a trine (120°) to the Moon and a sextile (60°) to the Sun and Mercury.  Additionally, Neptune is forming trines (120°) to the Sun/Mercury and sextiles (60°) to the Moon/Pluto.  All of these supportive aspects may help us make any changes/transformations or to do our healing work more easily than normal.  Uranus can actually bring a sense of excitement and anticipation.  Neptune’s impact may increase our imagination, creativity, compassion, and intuitive abilities.  It may also help us access our emotions and support heartfelt communication, which will provide support within our relationships.  The Mercury/Uranus sextile may help open the lines of communication while also allowing us to think outside the box and find unexpected solutions to our problems.

At the time of the Full Moon, Venus will be in a challenging square (90°) to Neptune and a supportive trine (120°) to Saturn.  This is an interesting mix of energies.  On the one hand, the Venus/Neptune square could mean that there’s a risk that we are viewing our relationships and finances through “rose colored glasses.”  However, the Venus/Saturn trine may bring a sense of stabilization and maturity.  If we can’t put off a decision regarding our partnerships or finances, then we are advised to consciously access the energy of Saturn and take a realistic look before taking any major leaps.  Saturn also indicates that we could receive tangible help from those in authority or those who are older than we are.  Or conversely, we might play that role in the lives of others.  There is a risk that the lower expression of Saturn could rear its ugly head, which may include becoming dogmatic or rigid in applying our values to the choices made by others.  However, Neptune’s presence can help us avoid this by bringing in qualities of compassion and inclusion.  And given Mercury is in a trine to Neptune (120°), we could find our communication is more honest, compassionate, and forgiving than usual.

As we discussed in the last Moon Update, Saturn continues to square (90°) the North and South Nodes, and Uranus is creeping closer and closer to an exact conjunction (0°) with the North Node.  This t-square configuration is telling us that changes (squares) are likely in some of the structures in our lives and that what we have learned from the past (South Node) will likely support us in moving forward (North Node).  With Uranus becoming more and more influential, the felt need for change (on both a personal and societal level) will be increasingly powerful and possibly unpredictable.  For the next few months, it’s especially important that we each manage our energy and emotions because this will likely be a volatile time.  If nothing else, it would be a good idea to remember to take a deep breath . . . or two . . . or three . . . when we start feeling ourselves reacting to something.  As I always say, we may not have control over everything in our lives, but we do have control over how we react to whatever is happening to us.

And just a reminder:  Saturn is currently in retrograde until the end of October .  This means that we will likely benefit from reviewing our past in order to discern important lessons, especially those related to areas that may be related to Taurus because both Uranus and the North Node are in that sign.  This could include our finances, personal resources, material possessions (especially those that are not shared with others), and sense of security.  It could also require some reflection regarding our values and what gives us pleasure or enjoyment.  And especially while Saturn is in retrograde, we are encouraged to move slowly, diligently, and responsibly.  It also continues to be a good time to wrap up any unfinished tasks or projects.

On Sunday, July 17, Venus moves out of Gemini and into heart-centered Cancer for a 3.5-week stay (until Thursday, August 11).  Venus always enjoys its visit to Cancer because both are heart-centered.  This is a time period when we typically feel extra nurturing.  However, we also could feel extra protective of others and of ourselves, and we might be more cautious than usual.  While Venus moves through Cancer, we often are more emotionally sensitive than usual, especially within our relationships.  This heightened sensitivity can work for us or against us.  But if we feel safe and secure within a relationship, then this can be a wonderful time to bond and connect with those we love.

Then on Tuesday, July 19, Mercury makes a quick visit to Leo, where it will remain until Thursday, August 4.  During this time, our thinking will become more creative.  Playing with words or even playing word games can be particularly enjoyable.  We are focused on grand goals, and the bigger the better.  Unfortunately, details or having to listen to others may be seen as a distraction or an annoyance, which can undermine some of our efforts unless we consciously check to make sure we aren’t missing anything important.  Our writing and speech may be a bit on the dramatic side right now, but we can be very persuasive and exude a sense of confidence that we might not normally display.

The same day (Tuesday, July 19), Chiron begins its 4-month retrograde phase.  During this time, the focus on our healing is inward.  It’s a time when we are more likely to heal deep wounds that we normally ignore or push into the shadows.  This is especially true because Chiron is in fiery Aries.  This provides courage to do the inner healing, but it also can go a big “to far” at times.  We do need to be careful; while Chiron is in retrograde we may feel drawn to a healing modality that is pretty “out there.”  It might initially sound great, but it may not provide what we need.  We also need to avoid getting “lost” in exploring our inner world or focusing on our imperfections.  The goal here is to heal, which means we need to accept our weaknesses and then bring our knowledge and wisdom back into the world in order to help others deal with the same or similar problems.

Then on Friday, July 22, the Sun joins Mercury in Leo.  This month-long transit of Leo occurs during the summer months in the Western Hemisphere, and it’s a time when many people feel drawn to have fun and engage in pleasurable activities.  We want to share our unique gifts with the world around us, and it’s even better if we can enjoy ourselves while doing so.  Although one part of us wants to be a team player, we may feel more generous and giving than usual.  We just need to be careful to take others into consideration and not focus solely on our own needs, feelings, opinions, etc.  The heart chakra is associated with Leo, so we want to make sure we are sharing our gifts from a heart-centered place and not from our ego’s need for attention or admiration, which is the lower expression of Leo.

Overall, this Capricorn Full Moon provides a complex blend of both the need for change and the support to make those changes.  There is also a complex mix of practicality and idealism.  Our focus will likely be on trying to find a balance between our personal and public lives, and this may require that we deal with relationships in a compassionate and respectful manner.  If we are feeling extra sensitive or if we get triggered by something occurring now, there is quite a bit of support to look inward and determine what wounds might need to be.  But it’s important to keep in mind we will likely begin to feel frustrated if we aren’t doing something that produces tangible results.  Therefore, this is a good time to dive into that big project, especially if it involves wrapping up loose ends before beginning something new.  Making realistic decisions regarding our “stuff” is also recommended.  This could include throwing out or donating what is no longer serving us or replacing something that is too old.  But in general, this is a very powerful and volatile time, and we all need to remember to breathe and do whatever is needed to stay calm, grounded, and focused on a positive image of what is possible in that future.
