SPECIAL NOTE: The location of any planet is determined by the degrees and minutes within a sign. Each of the degrees (°) in an astrological sign is further broken down into 59 minutes (59’). Normally, when calculating the degree of a New or Full Moon, most astrologers will round up any minutes to the nearest degree. For example, if a New Moon in Gemini was located at 22°16’, then I would tell you that the New Moon was located at 23° of Gemini. This is what I normally do in these Moon Updates, and this approach works most of the time unless the Moon is located at 29° and any number of minutes (e.g., 29°03’, 29°48’). To round up to the nearest degree will move the Moon to the next sign. This is the case with this Full Moon in Sagittarius (i.e., rounding up would move the Full Moon into Capricorn). Therefore, I will not be rounding up the degree in this Moon Update.
In the Pacific Time Zone, the Moon will be full at 4:02 a.m. on Monday, June 20. With this Full Moon, the Sun in Gemini will be in opposition (180°) to the Moon in Sagittarius. To further clarify how this Full Moon will impact you on a personal level, locate 29°32’ of Gemini and 29°32’ of Sagittarius in your birth/natal chart. The issues associated with those two houses are going to be most impacted by this Full Moon’s presence.
Every two or three years, two consecutive Full Moons occur in the same sign. On May 21, we had the first Full Moon in Sagittarius, and this month we have the second in Sag. The first occurred at the beginning of Gemini and Sagittarius (1°13’), and this one at the very end (29°32’). When two consecutive Full Moons occur in the same sign, the themes and messages inherent with each of the signs are magnified.
Also, the 29th degree of any sign is significant. It represents the culmination of all that has been learned within each sign. It is a time when we may be asked to demonstrate to the Universe that we are ready to move to the next phase, but sometimes this means cleaning up any unfinished business associated with the lessons of those signs.
As was discussed in the last Sagittarius Full Moon Update, Gemini and Sagittarius are similar in that both are interested in knowledge. But they are different. Gemini is about learning and communicating basic information. Sag is about taking that basic information, integrating it, forming beliefs and concepts, and applying it in the form of wisdom. Whereas Gemini tends to represent the beginner’s mind and is open to all possibilities, Sagittarius is using wisdom to determine what is true. It is important to keep in mind, though, that Full Moons can pull out the shadow (or lower expression) of each sign. With Gemini, we can talk too much, listen too little, and be overly focused on the cognitive over the emotional. With Sag, the shadow side is that we can be honest at the expense of compassion, and our beliefs can become so entrenched that we become judgmental and opinionated.
At the time of this Sagittarius Full Moon, we are being strongly influenced by a powerful mutable grand cross. This occurs when 2 planets are in opposition to each other (180°), and 2 other planets are also in opposition (180°) to each other. Additionally, each of the 4 planets is squaring (90°) the next planet, which forms a cross in the sky. When explaining the complex nature of a grand cross, I like using the analogy of a mobile over a child’s crib. All 4 ends of the mobile need to be in balance or the entire mobile goes catawampus. Consequently, balance is essential with a grand cross, which means we need to determine if any part of the mobile is being given too much or too little attention. And with all 4 of the planets in mutable signs, maintaining that balance will very likely be a moving target. We will need to be flexible, adaptable, and ready to adjust our strategy based on new information.
The 4 planets involved in this grand cross are (1) Mercury in Gemini, (2) Jupiter in Virgo, (3) Saturn in Sagittarius, and (4) Neptune in Pisces. Both Mercury and Neptune are in the signs that they rule, which increases their power. Additionally, Jupiter is conjunct (0°) the North Node, and Neptune is conjunct (0°) the South Node. Whew! That’s a lot of powerful energy to balance! To (hopefully) make this a bit easier, let me summarize some important things to keep in mind when working toward finding that ever-changing point of equilibrium:
- Remain as flexible and adaptable as possible
- Keep an open mind and be receptive to new possibilities/solutions
- Question any long-held assumptions we might hold and avoid judgments
- Use the Law of Attraction to keep our minds focused on the positive and what we want (rather than what we don’t want)
- Be discerning and develop a healthy inner philosophy
- Look at how we can use past lessons to expand into new arenas
- Focus on what matters to us and what our personal inner truth is
- Question ourselves to make sure we aren’t either (a) focusing on reality and ignoring our dreams or conversely (b) getting lost in dreams at the expense of our responsibilities
- When solutions seem murky or we are feeling confused, now is a good time to practice trusting, using our intuition, “going with the flow,” and “letting go and letting God”
Just 12 hours after the Sag Full Moon on Monday, June 20, the Sun moves into Cancer. This is the time of the Solstice, and it marks the changing of the seasons in both hemispheres. It is also a time when the electromagnetic fields around the Earth weaken (for the day before, of, and after). When this happens, we have a better chance of being influenced by cosmic energy streaming toward us from the Universe. It’s like we have an opportunity to get an upgrade to our hard drive, which can results in leaps in our development.
The movement of the Sun into Cancer at the time of the Solstice means that our attention for the next month will likely be drawn toward home, family, and security needs. Cancer energy can be very nurturing, but it can also be defensive if it feels threatened. It’s a highly intuitive sign that asks us to trust our feelings even when our logical or rational mind would tell us otherwise. A healthy use of the Sun in Cancer is to use our personal history to strengthen our ability to move into the future.
But even before the Solstice, the energy of Cancer has already started to impact us. On Friday, June 17, Venus moved into Cancer (where it will remain until July 13). During this 4-week period, we will likely find that our feelings soften and we are ready to be more caring, tender, and affectionate with those we love. We may also feel more nostalgic and sentimental. However, Venus in Cancer also needs to feel safe in order to love. Safety and security concerns could cause the crab to pull into its protective shell.
On Wednesday, June 22, Mercury squares (90°) Jupiter, which could mean an influx of new ideas or a major change of mind. However, if possible, it’s best to avoid making any decisions that day due to Mercury also squaring (90°) the North and South Nodes, which could mean that any incoming information may leave us feeling confused as old information conflicts with new data. For today, just focus on gathering information, and trust that decisions will be easier in a day or two.
There is good news! The final in a series of three trines (120°) between Jupiter and Pluto occurs on Sunday, June 26. Over the past 6 months while these trines have been occurring, many of us have dug deep in order to identify our true beliefs, and we are ready to make changes that will provide long-term support for living in alignment with those beliefs. This supportive alignment often leaves us feeling optimistic, and we may have deep clarity or insights about how to bring more abundance and prosperity into our lives. Hidden assets may be revealed that can be combined with intense self-discipline. Later that same day, a sweet sextile (60°) between Mercury and Uranus increases the chances of sudden insights that clear away any mental clutter or confusion.
On Monday, June 27, the asteroid associated with inner healing, Chiron, begins its retrograde phase, which will last until December 1. During the next few months, we may feel guided inward for deep healing, which may include a more profound acceptance, forgiveness, and empathy for ourselves and others. We may feel that we need time to review all the changes and growth we have gone through over the past few months. We all need to make sure that we aren’t just putting Band-Aids over wounds that need deeper cleansing in order to be truly healed. We may also use this inner-directed time to put things in perspective and see the lessons that have been learned from recent challenges.
For many of us, Wednesday, June 29, may be a day of celebration because the planet of forward motion, Mars, will move out of retrograde and begin moving direct again. Since turning retrograde back on April 17, many have experienced a series of events that have felt like false starts, blocks, and frustrations. It’s been hard to reframe all of these events as positive, but they have been designed by the Universe to help us carefully reconsider our plans, make necessary adjustments, and be ready to create a very firm foundation upon which to grow and develop. With Mars moving direction again, we are ready to act on what we have learned. However, keep in mind that it will likely take a little time for Mars to gain traction, so movement forward may not come in a gush but as a trickle, at least at first. But movement is coming!
Wednesday, June 29, also sees Mercury joining the Sun and Venus into Cancer, where it will remain until July 15. With emotional Cancer influencing our thoughts, we may find that our judgments become more subjective than objective and communication may become increasingly personal. Although Mars begins moving direct the same day and is very likely telling us we are ready to move forward, don’t be surprised if Mercury in Cancer might cause doubts to emerge. This is likely if we feel vulnerable or unready to let go of something from the past that has provided a sense of security. Although we need to use the courage provided by Mars to take the next indicated step, we also will need to take time to calm any fears expressed by our inner child. Mars knows that the adult part of us is sufficient to the tasks ahead, but we need to reassure our Cancer-influenced inner child that we will be with him or her every step of the way.
Finally, on Thursday, June 30, Venus will oppose (180°) Pluto. This could temporarily put important relationships into a pressure cooker. Yes, this powerful alignment could intensify passion and intimacy; however, equally as common are jealousy, manipulation, and power struggles. Something that has been brewing below the surface could come to a head. Be careful not to overreact. A positive use of this energy is to make an honest assessment of what we truly value.
Overall, this Full Moon in Sagittarius is asking us to make sure we are living aligned with our own inner truth. By consciously choosing the higher expression of Gemini and Sag, we can show the Universe that we are open-minded, aligned with our values and beliefs, and ready to move forward once Mars starts moving direct on Wednesday, June 29. The time of the Full Moon could be a very spiritual and psychic time due to the strong presence of Neptune in Pisces. However, due to the mutable grand cross, we will likely need to make frequent adjustments in order to maintain a healthy balance between our intuition and rational thought, and between expansion and responsibility. If we get overwhelmed with too much mutable (changeable) energy flowing around us, it will be helpful to take a deep breath, remind ourselves of our goals, and be sure we are aligned with our inner truth. Part of the message of this Full Moon is to know when to let go, surrender, and trust in Divine Timing and Divine Order. A tall order, but remember, “A bird sitting on a tree is never afraid of the branch breaking, because her trust is not on the branch but on its own wings” (Unknown).
