NOTE: If you didn’t get a chance to read the last Moon Update, it included some information about the upcoming year: FULL MOON IN CANCER – Plus a peek at 2016 according to astrology and numerology (December 25, 2015)
In the Pacific Time Zone, the New Moon will occur at 5:30 p.m. on Saturday, January 9. This New Moon finds the Moon and Sun in conjunction (0°) at 20° of Capricorn. To further clarify how this New Moon will impact you on a personal level, locate 20° of Capricorn in your birth/natal chart. The issues associated with that house are going to be most influenced by this New Moon’s presence.
New Moons offer us an opportunity to set new goals and intentions in the sign in which they occur. This month, we have a New Moon in Capricorn. As an earth sign, Capricorn is very concerned with mastery over our physical plane of existence. However, as the last earth sign in the Zodiac, its focus is not on the accumulation of material goods or the seeking of accolades from the external world. Capricorn is asking us to use our earthly gifts to be of spiritual service.
Capricorn is ruled by Saturn, and both the sign and the planet are often associated with hardship, challenges, and lessons. And yes, there is often a more serious or heavy feeling to this time of year. However, this heaviness is very important. Just as lifting weights will develop muscles, Capricorn’s focus is the development of strength and self-reliance through dealing with life’s difficulties. With this New Moon, we are being asked to gain a higher perspective and comprehension of the challenges that we are dealing with. It’s time to “look for the lessons” by using our spiritual understanding and intuitive insights.
This New Moon also activates the ongoing Uranus-Pluto square (90°) by being in conjunction (0) with Pluto and squaring (90°) Uranus. Due to Pluto’s involvement and the strong Capricorn influence at this time, issues of power and control may be heightened. If we’ve been avoiding dealing with situations that involve power, we may need to “face the music,” as they say. These aspects can provide us with the added strength to fight for what we feel is most important to us, including our independence from outside influences. And the presence of Uranus means that we may be provided with some new ideas and fresh new energy related to whatever we want to achieve in our lives.
Throughout the month of January, we should all look carefully at what we want to develop in our lives and then come up with a plan for how to achieve this. But with the energy of Capricorn being so ever-present right now, we need to be brutally honest with ourselves and set reasonable, realistic goals. If we can be practical and pragmatic, then we can create systematic solutions to problems and accomplish great things. In order to do this, we may need to break down any defense mechanisms or eliminate any unhelpful behaviors or rationalizations. It’s time to get organized, focus on creating solid foundations in our lives, and get to work.
Right before the New Moon (Thursday, January 7), Jupiter begins its annual retrograde period, which will continue through May 9. Jupiter is in Virgo, and its retrograde motion in this sign urges us to stop being so hard on ourselves and see the bigger picture. During this 4-month time frame, we should reconsider what skills we would like to develop that would help us be of service to the world in a more positive way. It’s also a good time to revisit any lingering problems with our health, efficiency, or organization. That same day, many of us might receive important insights about how to accomplish these goals due to a square (90°) between the Sun and Uranus. The Sun provides the light we need to see clearly, but as it true with Uranus energy, these insights may come in unexpected ways that leave us feeling startled or unsettled. We need to be flexible and adapt to any surprising changes in our schedules or plans.
Then on Friday, January 8, retrograde Mercury moves back into Capricorn after a very brief visit to the lighter energy of Aquarius. (Click here to read more about Mercury retrograde, which was discussed in the last Moon Update). This foray back into Cap is doubling Mercury’s usual time spent in this sign. This is a great time for us to rethink, review, revamp, and release whatever isn’t working in our lives or isn’t in our highest good. We may find ourselves being unexpectedly pulled back into projects that we thought (or hoped) were already complete. While Mercury is in retrograde, it is our opportunity to have a “do-over” and/or complete any unfinished business. Just be extra careful to double and triple check all written and oral communication, because Mercury retrograde can cause us to overlook important details and/or make “silly mistakes” due to our more “internal” focus.
On Friday, January 8, we get some support for starting this process described above through a conjunction (0°) between Venus and Saturn. This aspect asks us to clarify our values, commitments, and priorities. Saturn makes us aware that we do have limited resources of time, energy, or money. So to have what we want (Venus), some tough decisions may need to be made (Saturn). This conjunction is supporting us in choosing wisely so we don’t have regrets later. Therefore, Friday may feel pretty serious because we will be focusing on the realities of life and facing whatever we need to do to achieve our goals.
Tuesday, January 12, sees a trine (120°) between Venus and Uranus. For some of us, this can be a wonderful aspect. We may have less fear of taking risks today, and we embrace all that is new, unusual, or out-of-the-ordinary, especially with financial issues and romance. However, for those who are stuck at work or in situations that don’t allow them to pursue what they love, this aspect may leave them feeling impatient and frustrated. Rather than make impulsive decisions today (which can happen when Uranus is involved), it would be more effective to find ways to take the evening off, be with good friends, and/or do whatever makes our hearts sing. Leave any important decisions for another day.
Another trine (120°) the next day (Wednesday, January 13) between the Sun and Jupiter will have a much more grounded feel given the Sun and Jupiter are both in earth signs (i.e., Capricorn and Virgo, respectively). We may feel ready to expand, improve, learn, and cooperate. Our enthusiasm runs high. We may have more light (Sun) to shine on any tricky “moral issues” (Jupiter) that we may be currently grappling with. However, the same day, Venus will square (90°) Chiron, which may bring into our awareness some issues that need healing within our relationships or related to our finances. We may feel socially insecure today, but the supportive trine between the Sun and Jupiter will likely help us work through any issues that come up so we can move toward positive solutions and healing.
Thursday, January 14, sees retrograde Mercury conjoining (0°) the Sun and also trining (120°) both Jupiter and the North Node. With all of these aspects involving the mental energy associated with Mercury, many will be thinking and talking a lot. However, with Mercury being in retrograde, we may be more likely to talk to ourselves rather than others. It’s a good time to be doing inner work as we explore (Jupiter) new ways to deal with life lessons (North Node). Journaling would be very helpful at this time.
When Venus squares (90°) Jupiter on Sunday, January 17, we may all be feeling a great deal of love toward everyone and everything! However, we need to avoid overdoing, overspending, or overstating our feelings. Today is not a good day for making any decisions, and definitely avoid any impulsive purchases. We may also need to watch for any tendency to attempt to fix everything and make everyone happy.
The next day (Monday, January 18), a trine (120°) between Mars and Neptune will heighten our intuitive abilities and creativity. Neptune softens Mars’s usual warrior nature and supports us in letting let go of resentments. It is a good day to “go with the flow” and engage in activities that bring joy.
Overall, we all need to remember that we are here to give our earthly gifts to the world in some unique way. This New Moon in Capricorn is asking us to check-in with ourselves and take a serious look at whether we are following our spiritual path or a path dictated to us by someone else or by societal stereotypes, rules, and norms. Our attention is being drawn to the responsibilities that we are committed to fulfill, and part of that responsibility is to live a life of service and of joy. With both Mercury and Jupiter in retrograde in earth signs, it is a good time to reevaluate our priorities, structures, and goals. It’s time to finish any unfinished business, although this may involve working internally first before we are ready to take external action. To make any decisions, this would be a good time to use what Abraham-Hicks refers to as our Emotional Guidance System. If an action evokes a negative emotion, then it might not be the correction action. If the action creates a positive feeling, then it’s likely the correct course to take. And remember, even if the action is unfamiliar or even a bit scary, if it’s the right decision, then we will feel an inner sense of peace. So don’t resist any uncomfortable feelings. As so brilliantly pointed out by Byron Katie, “An uncomfortable feeling is not an enemy. It’s a gift that says, ‘Get honest. Inquire’.”
