In the Pacific Time Zone, the New Moon will occur at 1:44 p.m. on Tuesday, August 2. This New Moon finds the Moon and Sun in conjunction (0°) at 11° of Leo. To further clarify how this New Moon will impact you on a personal level, locate 11° of Leo in your birth/natal chart. The issues associated with that house are going to be most influenced by this New Moon’s presence.
All New Moons create a powerful focus of new energy in the sign involved. The symbol associated with Leo is the lion, and lions are powerful creators whose presence will be felt! The lion, after all, is the king of the jungle. Most of the time, it spends its time surveying its domain, enjoying the pleasures of life, and creating through procreating. Love and creativity are key features of Leo. However, it’s important to remember that when a lion needs to act, it will act quickly and sometimes with a roar. They will go after what they want (Leo is a fire sign), and they are not afraid to defend what they love or pursue what their loved ones need.
Leo is ruled by the Sun, which represents the conscious expression of our true self, our very essence. This Leo New Moon reminds us that we all came to this lifetime in order to be creators. What we choose to create often is represented by the qualities of our own Sun sign. Our creations are unique to each one of us because each of us is a soul with different needs, desires, and energy. We need to shine our light in order to effectively live out our life script, and it is important to remember that our light (Sun) can be dimmed if we are trying to create someone else’s dreams and not our own.
All astrological signs have lower and higher expressions, and we have freewill choice about how we will express the energy of each sign. During the time of this New Moon, we are being given an opportunity to explore how we are choosing to express our Leo energy in the world. The lower expression occurs when we choose to be overly dramatic in order to get attention. When this tendency is encountered in ourselves or another person, it may feel like there is a bottomless well when it comes to the need for appreciation. Using Leo’s energy in this way is unfortunate because the higher expression of Leo’s energy is very special. Leo’s love to love! For example, when someone with their Sun sign in Leo loves us, we know it. And during the time of the Leo New Moon, we’re all being given the opportunity to express that type of heartfelt love! Other qualities associated with the sign of the lion include leadership, self-confidence, loyalty, playfulness, and romance, all of which can more easily be expressed during this New Moon.
Yes, the Sun and Moon are both in Leo, but so is Venus. Known as the planet of love, Venus magnifies the Leo New Moon’s focus on making love something very grand and special. We may be more generous with our time, energy, or money, especially with those we care about. This can also apply to a cause or endeavor that we have a heart-felt commitment to. But Venus can also stimulate the need for attention, validation, and even adoration. We do need to watch for a tendency to be overly dramatic in the expression of our feelings and to be patient if others are expressing their feelings with a roar.
Right before the Leo New Moon (Monday, August 1), a trine (120°) between the Sun and Saturn will add stability to whatever we pursue in the coming days. And on the day of the New Moon (Tuesday, August 2), the Moon trines (120°) Saturn. Both of these free-flowing aspects will support us in feeling like we can start over if we need to and that we are sufficient to whatever tasks are demanded of us.
Additionally, just a few hours before the Full Moon (Tuesday, August 2), Mars re-enters the sign of Sagittarius. During its long retrograde phase this year, Mars had moved out of Sag and back into Scorpio. The last time it entered Sagittarius was back on March 6. Now, we will likely find ourselves feeling ready to take brave and bold steps in a direction that first became our focus in early March. Sagittarius’s influence means we will not want to take action simply for the sake of action. We want our pursuits to mean something, to match our ideals, and to contribute in some way. We also want to go on adventures, start new projects, and be free to do what we want. However, we do need to be careful not to abandon pursuits prematurely or set our sights too high, which are both tendencies when Mars is moving through Sag.
On Friday, August 5, Venus moves out of Leo and into Virgo, where it will remain until August 31. Love-focused Venus isn’t exactly comfortable in discriminating Virgo. There can be a tendency to hold ourselves and/or others to unrealistically high standards. But the positive aspects of Venus’s voyage through Virgo is that we become more discerning in who and what we love, which is important. Because Virgo is an earth sign, we may also find that we see new opportunities to work with like-minded others in productive ways.
The next day (Saturday, August 6) could be tricky interpersonally. An exact square (90°) between Mercury and Saturn could leave us feeling confused or misunderstood. And then a square (90°) later in the day between Venus and Mars might lead to differing perspectives that are hard to resolve. This is a day when using diplomacy and patience will pay off, although taking these approaches might be difficult for some. Sometimes the wisest course is to “agree to disagree,” and then use the wonderful energy of the Sun in Leo to focus on expressions of love from the heart.
Also on Saturday, August 6, Saturn will square (90°) both Mercury and Neptune, and Mercury will be in opposition (180°) to Neptune. This forms a powerful t-square (right triangle) in the sky above us. Then on Wednesday, August 10, Venus replaces Mercury in this t-square configuration. Whenever we experience a t-square, it’s like a burr underneath the saddle on a horse. The horse will feel it and buck (i.e., change positions) in an effort to dislodge whatever the offending object is. These back-to-back t-squares mean that change is likely. The presence of Mercury can be of help to us, but only if we are willing to perceive things differently. And with Venus, we can be reminded that the fears that are often associated with Neptune will fade if we can find joy and love in whatever we are involved in. Both Mercury and Venus are located in Virgo, so that burr under our collective saddle may involve using discernment to determine what is truly important to us, looking at how we define service to others, and/or exploring new ways to take care of our bodies.
Also on Wednesday, August 10, Mercury will trine (120°) Pluto. This positive flow of energy could help us think through and even express our “truth” in a positive way. We may also be able to more clearly understand current issues, which could lead to powerful insights about ourselves or others because our minds are attuned to psychological issues. Our attention is very focused today, but we want to dig deeply into any issue and not just skim the surface.
Friday, August 12, sees an opposition (180°) between Jupiter and the asteroid Chiron. We may need to accept ourselves even when we can clearly see our faults. It will help if we can remember that there is Divine Order in the universe, and the more we can trust, the easier our lives will become. This approach helps us release any fears that are keeping us from moving forward. Part of Divine Order is accepting that (a) we can’t always see the ‘big picture” before we need to act and (b) it is likely that we will only understand in retrospect how important this time period was in our lives.
On Saturday, August 13, Saturn ends its annual retrograde motion and begins moving direct again in Sagittarius. This retrograde period started way back on March 25. If we have done the work of the retrograde period, this has been a very significant time in our lives. Many of us have redefined our boundaries, reconstructed our foundation, and reassessed our priorities. We have felt a pull to find more meaning in their lives, and that may have required redefining what we believe in, reevaluating our long-term goals, and reexamining what or who we trust. We have been doing inner foundational work while Saturn has been in retrograde, but now our focus and efforts will turn outward. As Saturn’s speed increases over the coming weeks, our inner work will hopefully lead to feeling like the ground underneath us is more solid.
That same day, (Saturday, August 13) brings a couple of tough aspects. An exact square (90°) between Venus and Saturn may leave us struggling to find a way to resolve conflicts with others. At the same time, Saturn is getting increasingly close to another exact square (90°) with Neptune, which could cause us to feel disillusioned or feel a desire to escape. This aspect puts our dreams (Neptune) to the test (Saturn), and we need to have both faith in our dreams and a willingness to face obstacles in our path that are hindering our movement toward those dreams. For some of us, we may require that we deal with an addiction, face problems with money/finances, or initiate changes to our lifestyle that might involve simplifying and detoxifying.
Overall, this New Moon in Leo is asking all of us to explore how we can express our uniqueness in the world in a heart-centered way. Although we all have minds, it is our heart that often knows the “truth” in any situation. However, we need to be willing to listen to its voice. This is a good time to explore our passion and creativity. In the coming weeks, we will be talking about the final of three exact squares between Saturn and Neptune. Deep transformational forces have been at work since early this year, and we are headed toward the culmination of this phase. Many are already feeling the pull to finish up, clear out, and prepare for something very new to enter our lives. Endings lead to new beginnings, but only if we do the endings well. Don’t skip that part of the journey. But also remember to, “Celebrate endings, for they precede new beginnings” (Jonathan Lockwood Huie).
